It didn’t take long before we discovered that carrying a PCT permit is basically like carrying magic. One of the great things about having a long-distance permit is the number of opportunities that unfold themselves to you because of it. Great scenery! Free food! Discounts! Trail magic! Easy hitches! Staying in strangers’ homes! The list goes on and on and on. People are really, really nice to you when you carry this permit.
Here are some examples of PCT Permit Magic in our first 10 days on trail.

Hiking past really great scenery, thanks to the magical PCT permit.
And perhaps the reason we are most thankful for this permit…
…Not needing to carry a WAG bag up Mt. Whitney, thanks to the magical PCT permit.
A fellow PCT hiker with a fondness for alliteration renamed a handful of WAG bags for our fellow hiking friends, the JMTers. JMTers are those hiking the John Muir Trail and who, alas, might need to carry the all-mighty WAG bag.
