Homemade Chalk On Friday

I had a mediocre Friday, so I decided to make chalk, because sidewalk chalk makes everything better. It turns out that homemade chalk isn’t very hard to make. I found a few recipes and went to work:

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 c Warm water
  • 1 c Plaster of Paris
  • Toilet paper tubes
  • Wax paper
  • Food coloring
  • Duct tape

Directions:

1. Duct tape the bottom of toilet paper tubes. Cut wax paper about 2 inches taller than tubes. Stick in tubes. I omitted the duct tape and attempted to just cover the tube bottoms with wax paper and Scotch tape them in place. Poor decisions.

2. Put plaster of Paris in disposable container.  Add coloring. Add warm water and stir.

3. Pour mixture into tubes and let harden for 24+ hours. Peel tubes and wax paper away. Ta-Da! Chalk.

The recipe actually didn’t make that much chalk (maybe one tube’s worth), so I would probably double the recipe in the future.

And also wear gloves. Gloves would’ve been a prudent decision.
